historical archaeology
Sighting old cabins and mining equipment in the Colorado backcountry prompts us to wonder about the people and the lived experience of mining. “Who lived in that cabin? When was it occupied? How did they use this rusting equipment?” In this course we will learn how to interpret the material culture (tools, equipment, personal possessions) of miners and mining in Southern Colorado so we can begin to learn about the people behind the artifacts. The focus is on building skills necessary for an archaeologist of the historic period of Colorado. Field work and field trips may be for one to two weeks. Prerequisite: AN220 or AN320 or Consent of Instructor.
