understanding the Southwest in time and space
Learning Objective: To attain an intermediate level knowledge of the locations in space and time of the past peoples of the Southwest and some primary physiographic and archaeological features and sites of the Southwest.
All archaeological interpretation begins with an understanding the social and environmental context of past human actions. This activity will enhance your knowledge of these aspects of the SW.
A list of the primary social, political, and physiographic aspects of the Southwest I am asking you to learn are provided below. In brief, this activity involves being presented with maps and photos of the Southwest and being able to identify where peoples and places are/were. I recommend you use Google Maps, Google Earth, and the books or articles we have read as a study aid. These peoples and places include:
1) The archaeological cultures known as: Ancestral Puebloan, Hohokam, Mogollon, Sinagua, Patayan, Trincheras, Casas Grandes (Paquime). Resource: click here and here. In addition to knowing where these peoples lived, I'll ask you to identify some representative images of material culture and/or architecture from several of the culture areas. The Powerpoint slides I showed in class are available on Canvas, Files.
2) Key archaeological sites discussed in class: Chaco, Mesa Verde, Lower Salt River Valley Hohokam, Rio Grande Pueblos
