excavation simulation
Archaeologists don't excavate without an understanding of the past of an area and what we expect to find when/if we excavate. Just like archaeologists, we'll prepare for our work by:
1. Reading background information - click here about the culture history and lifeways of the peoples who lived and still live in the area of our simulated excavation. Please select each link at the top of the page (Paleoindian, Archaeic, Basketmaker II, etc.) and read the associated content to learn about changes through time in the Mesa Verde region.
2. Reading and checking our excavation report once it's complete. Please read the introduction of the "Roy's Ruin" site in SW Colorado- click here and skim through the rest of the report clicking on links of interest to see how archaeologists document and interpret sites. The in-class activity we will do is built from the excavation at this site.
3. Watch this video (click here) to see surface remains of similar archaeological sites in the Mesa Verde region.
