Loss of the archaeological record and you
In this activity, I ask you to think deeply about the problem of the loss of the archaeological record and our past human heritage.
Please read Article 1, then consider the issues involved and the actions of the individuals involved. Please write a 1.5 to 2 page personal response (12 point font/double spaced) to the emotional, legal, and/or ethical issues stimulated by the article. Consider and explain what you will do the next time you find an artifact from the past.
You will receive full credit for this activity if your response demonstrates a depth of consideration of the issues involved. Please mention and react to (in writing) the central event of the chapter so I know you read it. You do not need to articulate a position you think I might favor. I am interested in your thinking and your future actions, whatever they might be.
Your thinking will also benefit from reading some of the resources below.
Lipe, Conserving the In Situ Archaeological Record
Paskus (2009), Stealing the Past
Brodie and Renfrew (2005), Looting and the World's Archaeological Heritage: The Inadequate Response (in Blackboard)
