Late submission policy
Early submission of your assignments is always accepted and is a "best practice" for achieving a high grade and career success.
Unless stated otherwise on the assignment description page, late work will not be accepted. This is an issue of fairness; I cannot grant an exception for one student without granting everyone an exception. Letting someone turn in a late assignment can be demoralizing to those who went to extraordinary efforts to complete an assignment on time. I don't want any student to think, "why did I bother to get this in on time if he wasn't serious about the due date/time?" Likewise, I do not feel comfortable judging the reasons for a request to submit an assignment late. Should I accept a late assignment from a student who was ill but not from a student whose job required him/her to come in and work additional days?
All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the day the assignment is due. For example, assignments will be due before 10:00 am for a class that begins at 10:00 am. If you must miss class on a day when an assignment is due, you may email the assignment to me before it is due. If you have computer trouble, you may print the assignment out and give it to me at the beginning of class.
IF LATE SUBMISSION IS PERMITTED ON THE ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION PAGE
When late submission of an assignment is specifically allowed on the assignment description webpage, the following late penalty will apply:
For each 24 hour period an assignment is turned in late, 2 points will be deducted from the total points you earn on the assignment. For example, assume an assignment is due on 1 February at 10:00 am.
Assignments submitted between 10:00 am on 1 February and 10:00 am on 2 February will receive a 2 point deduction.
Assignments submitted between 10:00 am on 2 February and 10:00 am on 3 February will receive a 4 point deduction.
And, so forth. Weekends and holidays are counted.
EXTRAORDINARY AND UNANTICIPATED CIRCUMSTANCES
If something extraordinary and unanticipated has occurred in your life and you would like to request an exception to a late submission policy, you must discuss this with me in person during my office hours as soon a possible and no later than one week after the assignment due date. Please bring written documentation of the extraordinary event and an explanation of why you think the rest of the students in the class would agree that it is fair for you to be granted an exception. I will decide if an exception is warranted and fair to other students. All exceptions must be resolved before the last class meeting day.
UNIVERSITY AUTHORIZED ABSENCES
Because a university authorized absence is known well in advance and all assignments can be submitted in advance, late submission of assignments due to an authorized absences will follow the policies stated above. I am, however, open to making other arrangements with you if you contact me in advance of the assignment due date.
