Course design and learning outcomes


LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing this course, you should be able to: 
  • Describe what archaeology is, how it is practiced, and why it is important
  • Describe what materials archaeologists study, where these might be found, and how they are dated
  • Describe the role of inference in an archaeological understanding of the past
  • Explain some differences between how archaeology is practiced in the "Old" and "New" Worlds
  • Describe and explain the significance of dozens of archaeological discoveries
  • ​“Read” museums and archaeological sites you visit with an eye to how they are presented to the public
  • Practice and promote ethical stewardship of the archaeological record 

ACTIVITIES AND METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
  • Submit Reading Notes for each reading to help you learn and retain what you are learning
  • Take Quizzes to demonstrate your learning and strengthen your retention
  • Create a Discovery Research Design to understand how archaeologists must explain their proposed research and convince others of the merits of what they propose.   
  • Read a book (and answer questions) about archaeological discovery to deepen your knowledge of the subject
  • Attend every class to learn more about archaeological discoveries and share your ideas
