Evidence, Inference, and a Long-term Perspective with the Fifth Beginning by Kelly

Learning Objective: As a result of this assignment, you will solidify your understanding of how evidence supports inferences that lead to interpretations of the past--the process that is essential to archaeological thinking. This assignment will also begin the development of your long-term perspective on human history.

Please complete the worksheet in Canvas (Files), "Fifth Beginning Activity."

Expectations: We began the first day of class with an exercise of the differences between observations and inferences.  We discussed the evidence supporting each beginning and the strengths and weaknesses of some of that evidence. In this assignment, I expect that you will demonstrate your ability to identify much of the types of evidence used to argue his interpretations of the five beginnings. I also expect that you'll speculate on some evidence that was likely used but Kelly did not discuss. I don't expect that you get everything "right."  Rather, I expect that you will demonstrate that you have a strong understanding of an essential archaeological skill - connecting evidence to inferences that lead to interpretations of the past.
