ehraf, search method 2, Ocm subjects
Steps in selecting OCM subjects in Advanced Search (see http://screencast.com/t/Qx1eSjseA for full screenshot)
1. Click "Add Subjects" tab to open the Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM) thesaurus
2. Click "OCM Code" tab to view the OCM subjects grouped in numbered hierarchy. (Other menu tabs are A-Z index and Major Subjects)
3. Click the numbered ranges (e.g. 300-399) to browse all subjects available. There you will see that the 3 and 4-digit numbers serve as IDs.
4. Click on the word "Structures" (don't select the box) and an OCM code (e.g. 341) to read the description and determine whether you want to use the subject for your search.
5. Click box to select subject(s) across ranges.
6.a. Click "Add Subjects" to add them to your Advanced Search.
6.b. You can also add keywords to your search. For example, if you search for “monumental architecture” and already use OCM subjects related to architecture and structures, then the word “architecture” might not be necessary. Think of words that express large size structures. The string of keywords could look something like this: monument* “large size*” “large scale” plaza* temple* pyramid* Which keywords you use are up to you and, thus, not restricted to words found in the A-Z index of the Add Subjects menu. Sometimes it takes a few searches to find ideas for words in the paragraphs and pages of the eHRAF texts.
Tips:
Omit hyphens, e.g. use “large scale*” instead of “large-scale*”
Boolean operators matter! Use AND to narrow and OR to expand your search.
If you search across cultures there's no need to select "Add Traditions" or "Add All".
7. Click Search to reach the Traditions Results page. In this page you can further refine your search for specific subsistence types and/or sample type.
