Activity, argument mapping journal article
Now that you've learned how to argument map, it's time to put those skills to use. Remember, argument mapping is an exercise in critical thinking so you can see an author's argument and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. This is a core skill for critical thinking--something you will do well beyond your college years. Learning to argument map also teaches you how new knowledge is created in science--it is often a matter of effective and well supported argumentation. Many scientific articles and books use a format that is structurally similar to the template you will use.
The article to be mapped is below. Download it or read it here online. I've attached the CMAP file of the argument map template here; you can download it and fill in the boxes (to some extent) as you read the article. Please label each argument as Argument 1, Argument 2, etc. as I have demonstrated in the template. Your map should be very similar to the argument map template. Remember that the boxes in argument maps need to be complete or near complete sentences so that each argument is clear. This is different than concept mapping where complete sentences are often not necessary.
Note: if you did not complete the previous Argument Mapping Activity, I highly recommend you review it before completing this activity.
